Brussels, 2 July Brussels) (drinks media wire) - Cyprus will preside over the Council of the European Union from 1 July until 31 December 2012. Today, FoodDrinkEurope published a short brochure setting out the priorities for Europe’s food and drink industry for the coming six months during the Cypriot Presidency.
FoodDrinkEurope calls for the implementation of Europe 2020 Strategy's objectives to secure smart, sustainable and inclusive growth to improve industry’s competitiveness. First among a number of priorities, FoodDrinkEurope seeks continued efforts to sustain an environment for innovation and research and development to increase the food and drink industry’s competitiveness and its position as a leading exporter to third countries.
In support of industry’s continued efforts to improve consumer health and well-being by promoting healthy diets and lifestyles, FoodDrinkEurope asks Cyprus, as a member of the High Level Group on Nutrition and Physical Activity and Health (DPAH), to work with all stakeholders to achieve the objectives under the Strategy for Europe on Nutrition, Overweight and Obesity related health issues.
FoodDrinkEurope also asks the Cypriot Presidency to be aware of FoodDrinkEurope’s recently published ‘’Vision towards 2030’’, which demonstrates the progress already made by food operators in sustainable sourcing; resource efficiency along the food chain and sustainable consumption and production, and which also highlights the challenges and opportunities that the ‘green growth’ agenda presents for the future. FoodDrinkEurope asks the Cypriot Presidency to facilitate future actions to ensure the FoodDrinkEurope Vision goes in the right direction to respond to environmental challenges.
Speaking on behalf of FoodDrinkEurope, President Jesús Serafín Pérez commented: “this short brochure provides a complete overview of the priorities for progress in the six month term. Food operators look to the Cypriot Presidency to advance on these priorities to help foster growth in Europe’s first manufacturing industry’’
