(drinks media wire) – The Consejo Regulador, in the course of an Extraordinary session held on June 28, agreed to appoint Mr. Beltrán Domecq Williams as the new President of the Institution.
The decision was supported by all of the members of the Board and has been communicated already to the Regional Ministry of Agricultural Affairs and Fisheries for its immediate publication in the Junta de Andalucía´s Official Bulletin.
A direct descendant of some of the most historical names in the local wine-making scene and widely acknowledged an authority on Sherry, Beltrán Domecq (pictured) has developed a long and fruitful professional career, both as a vineyard expert as well as a reputed wine-maker, with a deep knowledge too of the commercial aspects of the business.
Born in Jerez in 1946 and educated in Spain and England, Mr. Domecq has a BA Hons. in Chemistry from Madrid´s Universidad Complutense and completed his studies with practices in the most prestigious French wine regions, as well as in California.
His first professional assignment was at Williams & Humbert’s bodega in Jerez, although most of his career has taken place in the historic house of Pedro Domecq, (today´s Beam Jerez). An oenologist by education and vocation, throughout his long career Mr. Domecq has assumed important responsibilities in different technical areas such as production, quality control, research and development; and as Director of Domecq`s Vineyard Division. His professional assignments have taken him to develop technical projects in such different places as Rioja, Tomelloso, Mexico, California and the Philippines.
With such diverse experience and as a logical consequence of his undisputed communication abilities, during the last years of his career Mr. Domecq has been very active in the field of training and education, delivering wine tastings and technical seminars around the World and making of himself one of the most authoritative voices for Sherry.
All this knowledge, accumulated through an entire life dedicated to the wines of Jerez, has finally crystallized in the recent publication of his book “El Jerez y sus Misterios” (Sherry and its Mysteries) an easy-to-read, up-dated treatise about our wines, with special attention to practical aspects such as the tasting and enjoyment of Sherry.
A former President of the Andalucian Association of Oenologists, Mr. Domecq holds very important awards both at national and international level. He was awarded “Winemaker of the Year” by the IWSC in 2005, is the grantee of the Royal Warrant to H.M.The Queen for Harvey’s Sherries and elected a Member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino in 2008 for his services to Sherry.
The new President of the Consejo Regulador considers his appointment a major challenge in his professional career; he declared that: “even though the situation that the Sherry Sector is facing nowadays is not easy, we must be optimistic. In this regard, I am absolutely committed to working as President. “With the help of all the members of the Denomination, bodegas and vineyard growers alike, and putting our efforts in line, there is no doubt that we will be able to reach our common goals and build a brilliant future for Sherry”.
