(drinks media wire) – South Africa’s capacity to wow international judges shows no signs of dimming with the specialty portfolio of Fine Brandy. By Design™ and other brandies from Distell putting in a glowing performance at the 2012 International Wine Challenge (ISC) in London, to earn a trio of gold medals and a cache of silvers.
The good news was received in the midst of the UK’s Olympic festivities, fuelling the South African mood of optimism. Caroline Snyman, who heads Distell’s spirit business division, said the vote of confidence in the country’s brandies was further confirmation of its status as a world-class contender. She added that the medals had come at a particularly good time for local brandies that were experiencing a new spurt in export demand.
Distell is South Africa’s leading producer of brandies for local and export markets.
“Consumers of spirits are continually discovering the excellence of local brandies at a range of price points to suit their needs and this is reflected in promising sales in Asia and Africa, in particular.”
This year, the 17th in the history of the ISC, close to 1 000 entries were received from 70 countries with some of the most prominent international master distillers evaluating submissions. Neil Mathieson, who chairs the brandy, cognac and armagnac section of the competition, has on several occasions highlighted the excellence of South African brandies that Snyman said are subject to amongst the most stringent standards worldwide.
Fine Brandy. By Design™ gold medallists were Van Ryn’s celebrated 12 Year Old potstill, the recipient of many international medals and trophies, as well as Klipdrift Gold, one of the country’s best-loved connoisseur brandies. The third gold went to Richelieu Export.
The six Fine Brandy. By Design™ silver medallists are all brandies with a winning track record in previous international contests, according to Snyman. They are Van Ryn’s 15 Year Old, both Oude Meester’s Demant and Souverein, Nederburg Solera Brandy Potstilled, Flight of the Fish Eagle and Uitkyk 10 Year Old Estate.
Amongst Distell’s other silver winners were Klipdrift Export, Klipdrift Premium, Oude Meester VSOB, Commando, Mellow-Wood 5 Year Old and Mellow-Wood Standard.
