Mondial du Merlot 2012 - The top wine is from Bordeaux!

(drinks media wire) – The Merlot wine competition, organized for the second time by the Vinea Association, saw nearly 300 wines entered. The judges awarded 25 gold medals and 64 silver ones, 30% of the wines entered as per standards set by the OIV. Several special prizes were also given, including one for the Best Merlot of the competition, which went to Earl Roumage from St Germain du Puch in the Bordelaise region of France. The best Swiss varietal (single grape) Merlot went to Hammel, from Rolle in canton Vaud. The Merlot World Champion producer prize was awarded to Cantina Monti in Cademario, Ticino. The awards ceremony takes place Wednesday 17 October at the Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola in Lugano, Ticino.

The 2012 Mondial du Merlot, organized in Sierre by the Vinea Association, put in the spotlight nearly 300 wines presented by 160 producers from 17 countries. The competition is one of only two competitions at this level in Switzerland, along with the Mondial des Pinots in Sierre, also organized by Vinea, that benefits from the patronage of the OIV (Organisation internationale de la vigne et du vin), the UIOE (Union Internationale des Śnologues) and the USOE (Union suisse des śnologues). Both are members of Vinofed, an international federation of the main wine competitions.

Seventeen international judges including oenologists, specialty journalists and international sommeliers took part, tasting and evaluating to select the world’s best Merlot wines.

The medals and special awards
The awards were handed to wines from a number of different production areas. The 25 gold medals went to 16 Swiss wines, 6 French ones, 2 from Romania and one from Lebanon.

The Earl Roumage winery in St Germain du Puch, France, won both the Best Merlot Varietal and the Best Foreign Varietal Merlot. Cantina Monti from Cademorio in canton Ticino won the Syngenta Merlot World Champion prize, given to the wine that has the highest number of points over three vintages. The Best Swiss Varietal Merlot went to the Hammel winery in Rolle, canton Vaud, for its Villeneuve wine from Vaud’s Chablais region.

La Romaine winery in Flantey, canton Valais, won the prize for the best blend and the Tilleuls winery in Vétroz, canton Valais won the Vinofed prize for the gold medal wine on which the judges most closely agreed.

The Older Vintages prize went to Clos St Thomas, Kab‐Elias, in Lebanon.

Smooth organization for the competition
Mr Valeriu Cotea, OIV delegate, congratulated the organizers on their professionalism and the smooth running of the competition, notably the quality of the computerized aspect of it and the new hardware provided by Vinea this year.
The Mondial du Merlot has become the competition of reference for international varietal wine competitions, benefiting from the support of two key sponsors, Syngenta and the city of Lugano, the cradle of Switzerland’s Merlots and the city where the prizes will be awarded.

Prize‐giving in Lugano, preceded by a conference presentation
The awards ceremony will take place 17 October at 18:30 in the grand setting of the Villa Castagnola in Lugano.
The event will be preceded by a colloquium organized by Vinea and Syngenta with, as its main themes, the challenges faced by Ticino’s producers in the future: climate change and its consequences as well as current research efforts.
The complete results of the Mondial du Merlot 2012 will be published 27 September on the site:
