(Drinks Media Wire). The Egyptian government has suspended rice exports for six months, beginning 1 April
Following the sharp increase in rough rice prices, the Minister of Industry and Trade last week decided to halt rice exports for six months, beginning April 1st, 2008.
In the days leading up to the decision, rough rice prices had reached about $430 per ton, compared to about $200 at the beginning of the export season in October 2007. Similarly, export prices for milled rice jumped from $450/ton to $750/ton.
Since the beginning of the export season, Egypt has already exported about 700,000 tons of rice. With the ban supposed to be in place until the next export season begins, total exports for 2007/08 are expected to be around 800,000 tons, well below the 1.2 million tons the local industry had hoped to export this year. Any existing export contacts for delivery after 1 April will not be fulfilled.
The decision to suspend exports had an immediate impact on prices, with rough rice prices dropping almost $100 per ton to $330 on the local market.
