The Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) announced the winners of its first Wine and Spirits Tasting Competition recently held at WSWA’s 66th Annual Convention & Exposition in Orlando.

Sponsored by The Tasting Panel Magazine, the competition proved to be a popular attraction and drew nearly 300 entrants in the spirits and wine categories. “Based on early feedback, we knew that suppliers were excited about the competition. But we’re thrilled with the final results especially for the competition’s first year,” said WSWA President and CEO Craig Wolf.

The Best in Show for the spirits category was awarded to Creamy Creation for its Spiced Pumpkin Pie Cream Liqueur, which also won Best New Liqueur. Biagio Cru and Estate Wines took home Best in Show in the wine category for its Ruhlmann 2004 Grand Cru Gewurztraminer, Alsace and also garnered Best New White Wine honors.

Best Established Liqueur: Tie between St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur (Cooper Spirits International) and Aperol (Palm Bay Imports)

The Best in Category winners will be featured in The Tasting Panel Magazine’s June issue while all medal winners will appear in the July issue. The spirits judges included Ann Tuennerman, founder of “Tales of the Cocktail," famed mixologists Gabrielle Orta, Jonathan Pogash, and Elad Zvi, spirits aficionado Joel Black, and The Tasting Panel Magazine’s Meredith May. Wine judges included notable wine experts Jeffrey Dorgan, Drew Galloway, Brian Koziol, MS, Sean Ludford, and Dave Madera.

The Wine and Spirits Tasting Competition event was one of several new high profile programs added to the WSWA Convention & Exposition schedule this year. In addition to the competition, attendees were privy to the industry premiere of the new PBS TV series, The Wine Makers; a timely Economic Forum featuring Dr. William Freund, Chief Economist Emeritus of the New York Stock Exchange; and the convention’s first General Business Session showcasing a major retailer, David Trone of Total Wine & More.

“With the economy impacting conventions nationwide, we realized months ago that it was imperative to enhance our programming to provide a value-added experience for attendees, exhibitors and our members,” said Wolf. “It’s apparent we hit a home run with the Tasting Competition so we’ll plan to not only repeat, but enhance, the competition for next year’s convention in Las Vegas.”
