Celebrities, Moms, Dads, and Kids Join Members of Congress as Reauthorization of Child Nutrition Act Gets Underway
Celebrities active in kids’ health and moms and dads from more than 29 states are descending on Capitol Hill, urging lawmakers to seize an historic opportunity to get junk food out of America’s schools as Congress begins work to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act. The Main Street moms, Hollywood stars, Senators and Members of Congress hold a news conference Wednesday, June 24 as the Healthy School Food Brigade fans out across Capitol Hill.
Outdated child nutrition standards allow a wide range of junk foods to be sold in schools along with the traditional “hot lunch” program. The 30-year-old regulations for vending and other food sales fail to protect America’s kids, fuel the obesity epidemic, make parents’ nutritional efforts difficult and undermine taxpayer investments in federal meal programs. And the existing rules make little sense: Fruitades with little juice can be sold, plain seltzer water cannot. Candy bars cookies and doughnuts OK; breath mints not.
