Attendees of the National Restaurant Association's 2010 Public Affairs Conference tell lawmakers about the integral role restaurants play in the economy
(Washington, D.C.) Nearly 500 restaurateurs from more than 45 states are convening in Washington D.C. this week for the National Restaurant Association's 24th annual Public Affairs Conference.
Today, conference attendees heard from U.S. Senator Mike Johanns (R-Nebraska) and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland). Sen. Johanns addressed the crowd of Public Affairs Conference attendees and spoke about the importance of food safety, as well as praising the industry’s leadership on the issue of nutrition information.
Majority Leader Hoyer discussed the importance of access to capital, and the role of the industry in the nation’s economic recovery, specifically in helping small businesses create jobs.
“Thank you for all you do to create jobs, grow the economy and feed us very well,” said Hoyer.
After the morning’s speakers, conference attendees headed to Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers and provide them with a better understanding of the integral role the restaurant industry plays in the economy, as the second largest private sector employer in the country. Priority industry issues include job creation, access to capital, business meal deductibility and food safety. More than 260 meetings between restaurant owners and legislators’ offices were scheduled for today.
Held April 14-16 at Washington’s Grand Hyatt Hotel, the National Restaurant Association Public Affairs Conference gives restaurateurs the opportunity to interact with members of Congress and share their perspective on the challenges of owning and operating restaurants. The conference agenda includes a dynamic lineup of prominent political experts, including current and former elected officials, political pundits, and industry leaders.
