(Drinks Media Wire). The National Restaurant Association today issued the following statement from Scott DeFife, Executive Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs, regarding House passage of S. 3307, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act:
"We applaud Congress for passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This legislation provides needed reforms to the National School Meals Program, including expanding access and funding to school districts. Such improvements will enhance the ability of school foodservice programs to provide more healthful items in reimbursable lunches, including more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The bill will also take a significant step toward reducing hunger by expanding the after-school supper program nationwide and better connecting eligible children with free school meals."
The National Restaurant Association has been working closely with First Lady Michelle Obama on the 'Let's Move' initiative. As part of that work, earlier this year the Association worked with member school lunch providers Aramark, Chartwells School Dining Services, and Sodexo to reach an agreement helping schools qualify for the 'HealthierUS School Challenge.' The school lunch providers pledged to include more fruits, vegetables, whole-grain and milk options, as well as double the amount of produce on school menus in the coming years.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which passed the Senate unanimously in August, will now go to the President for his signature.
