Cities, CSPI, & Health Groups to Announce Campaign to Reduce Soda Consumption

Teleconference at 11:00 a.m. EDT. on Wednesday, Aug. 31

(Drinks Media Wire) – WASHINGTON—The Center for Science in the Public Interest, health groups, and major city public health departments will announce a new campaign to encourage other groups and individuals to work to decrease consumption of soda and other sugary drinks.

Who: Barbara Ferrer, Ph.D., MPH, M.Ed., Health Commissioner, Boston
Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health, Los Angeles
Michael F. Jacobson, Ph.D., Executive Director, CSPI
Rachel Johnson, Ph.D., MPH, Vice Chair, Nutrition Committee, American Heart Association

What: News teleconference announcing the Life’s Sweeter With Fewer Sugary Drinks campaign. The campaign will seek to decrease consumption of soda and sugary drinks by about two-thirds—closer to the American Heart Association’s recommendation of 3 cans per person per week.

When: 11:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Why: Sugary drinks are the single largest source of calories in the American diet. Consumption of sugary drinks increases the risks of overweight and obesity, which promote diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and many other health problems. Reducing the consumption of soda and other sugary drinks would be a major public health victory and would help reduce health care costs for all levels of government.
