NZ’s First Summer Of Riesling

The Summer of Riesling is a worldwide movement that encourages the consumption, discussion and enjoyment of Riesling. This summer sees the movement bought to New Zealand for the first time, and with it New York founder Paul Grieco.

The Summer of Riesling began at Terroir Wine Bar in the East Village of New York City in 2008 as a single-minded attempt to get guests to at least try this noble grape. Throughout the entire summer only Riesling was offered by the glass as the white wine pour. It began a revolution, which saw wine bars & restaurants highlight and feature Riesling in a myriad of ways throughout Summer. The movement became international - Australia is about to begin its second Summer of Riesling.

The New Zealand Summer of Riesling kicks off on January 12th and is supported by some of New Zealand’s best Riesling producing wineries, restaurants, wine bars and retailers.

Together they will present a season of tastings, dinner and events all for the love of Riesling. The movement is fuelled by social media and a new generation of language about the variety, considered by many winemakers and trade as the greatest of them all. Participants will be armed with t-shirts, and transfers, given support on social media and co-ordinated through the NZ Summer of Riesling website www.summerofriesling.co.nz ,which goes live before Christmas.

Paul Grieco, also known as the Summer of Riesling Overlord, arrives in New Zealand on Saturday 21st January, with an itinerary designed to engage New Zealand trade and seed future Summer ofRieslings. His trip will include visits to Auckland & Wellington, a national Riesling tasting and multi-media event called “Climax” in the Waipara Valley on Tuesday 24th January 2012.

Summer of Riesling is bought to New Zealand by Angela Clifford, Waipara Valley ambassador and Duncan Forsyth, winemaker/owner at Mount Edward Wines in Central Otago.

“We love this variety in our region”, says Clifford “and we’re constantly frustrated by the lack of understanding about what makes it so special. This international movement , Summer of Riesling, gives us a different forum and opportunity to share our passion, to get people to drink it. Winemakers love it, the trade love it, we just want more consumers to choose Riesling!”

“The response from both NZ wineries and the trade has been overwhelming.” says Forsyth “The true triumph of Riesling is that it enables us to get along with those who do not possess it, we’re all just trying to cut down the number of people who don’t possess it I guess!”

The Summer of Riesling is expected to continue into March reflecting the wonderful “Indian Summer” conditions most NZ Riesling producing regions experience.
