(Drinks Media Wire). Peter Lehmann Wines are proud to announce Mr. Ian Lim as the winner of the Peter Lehmann Wines Shiraz Sommelier Award at the first ASI Asia-Oceania Best Sommelier Competition in Osaka, Japan. Mr Lim is the Resident Chief Sommelier with the Singapore Straits Wine Company in Singapore.
Each participant undertook a question and answer session on the subject of Shiraz, submitted a short essay and sat a practical blind tasting of a Shiraz wine from Tuscany, Italy. In the former editions of the PLW Award, shiraz wines from South Africa, France and Chile had been proposed. The results were judged by an independent technical committee including representatives of the ASI.
Upon receiving the Peter Lehmann Wines Shiraz Sommelier Award, Mr Lim commented:
“This was my first international competition, so I am very happy to have won this prestigious award. The first wine I ever tasted was a 1991 Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz.......It was in 2000 ! So this award may be a sign of destiny!”
Hans Aström, vice-president of Peter Lehmann Wines Ltd from Hess Family Estates, offered Ian Lim a double-magnum of Peter Lehmann Futures Shiraz saying “ the name of this wine is really adapted to what we intend to do with the young sommeliers : they are our future”. In addition, Ian Lim will be recognised as a Shiraz Sommelier Ambassador for the next two years for the Asia-Oceania region. He will travel to the Barossa as a guest of Peter Lehmann Wines to allow him to further study Shiraz.
Created in co-operation with the ASI, the Award aims to further knowledge, awareness and appreciation of Shiraz as one of the world’s classic red wine varieties. Vice-President of the ASI, responsible for Asia-Oceania, Shinya Tasaki, commented:
“It is a wonderful initiative of Peter Lehmann Wines to help young sommeliers improve their knowledge and a fantastic motivation for them. The winning candidate from Singapore, Ian Lim, will proudly go back to his country with a trophy that he will share with his colleagues, friends and family.”
The overall winner of the ‘Best Sommelier Competition Asia Oceania 2009’ was Mr Satoru Mori, current ‘Best Sommelier of Japan’ & ‘Peter Lehmann Shiraz Sommelier Japan’. Second prize was awarded to Mr Franck Moreau, Group Sommelier from the Merivale Group in Sydney. Third was the other Japonese candidate, Nobuhide Tani. Japan and Australia were on the front stage. And also Singapore thanks to Peter Lehmann Wines.
